Tree Planting by Lady Mary Peters
Tuesday 5th April was a very exciting day for all in Newmills Primary School. Mr Geoffrey Rainey, Chairman of the Board of Governors welcomed Lady Mary Peters LG CH DBE DL DStJ accompanied by Mr Gary Smyth MBE to school. Lady Mary, in her capacity as an ambassador for The Queen's Green Canopy had kindly agreed to plant a tree in the school grounds to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. A willow tree had been chosen and Lady Mary was helped by two pupils, Caitlyn P5, and Reuben P2 as well as Mrs Frances Nolan MBE DL, Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Mrs Sandra Millar, Principal. Following the planting of the willow tree Shiwen P7 presented Lady Mary with a stone decorated with flowers and butterflies as a memento of her visit to Newmills.
Inside to the heat and some refreshments was the next stop and then Lady Mary visited each of our classrooms speaking to the children and staff. The visit concluded with a walk around our garden with our willow dome, our decorated stones and the Bug Hotel which is a work in progress. A big thank you must go to Andy Griggs and members of the Newmills Wildlife Gardening Club who have been helping us develop our school garden.
